Match Report: Sheffield Star- Green 'Un: 2st February 1920:

LEEDS UNITED v CASTLEFORD TOWN

About 4,000 spectators were presentwhen the game commenced. The opening half was even. After a spell of midfield play Castleford attacked on the right, a sustained effort ended in Robins sending wide. Following an unsuccessful attack by Leeds, Garbutt made a praiseworthy solo run, and then sent in a long range shot which Rounds smartly saved. Castleford were doing most of the attacking, but the Leeds defence played a sound defensive game, particularly Waddington, who tackled fearlesslyand kicked with plenty of power. A corner to Castleford was well placed by Little, but Round saved smartly. The first real attack by the United resulted in taking the lead. After Ellson had headed in from a corner by Fawcett the ball went from Cook, the Castleford goalkeeper, to Mason who scored with a low drive. Two abortive attacks by Castleford were followed by a well manoeuvered forward movement by the Leeds vanguard. When in front of goal Plows sent the ball to Ellson, who drove in a capital shot which Cook saved. A free-kick and a throw in to Castleford took them nearer the home goal but once again the United defenders got the better of their opponents.Three minutes from the interval Mason made a fine opening for Fawcett, who scored after the ball had struck the upright.

In the second half the right, Leeds attacked on where Mason and Ellson displayed some clever pacing before Mason finished off the movement by putting in a splendid centre from which Birtles nearly scored. Castleford attacked immediatel afterwards, Garbutt, Lynch and Robbins displaying some fine passing, but the final shot by Garbutt went wide. A free-kick to Leedsenabled them to make progress, but the movement was checked by Davies intercepting a pass by Plows. In the last half hour Leeds monopolised the play, and scored further goals through Ellson, Rodgers, Birtles and Mason, the Castleford defence on practically every occasionfailing to hold the vigoorous Leeds United forwards.
